With COVID-19, Consumers are Jump-Starting Home Improvement Painting Projects, J.D. Power Finds
TROY, me .– (BUSINESS WIRE) – With U.S. citizens continuing to seek refuge as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many have started a home improvement project. Coupled with the JD Power 2020 SM Power Satisfaction Study published today, the results of a JD Power Pulse Survey have shown that more than a third (35%) of people are in the process or plan to do a home improvement project in the next three months. This includes a 40% increase, especially due to the unexpected extra time at home. With people confined to their home, painting has become the main home improvement project planned. 44% say they painted recently or will be in the next three months.
“A pulse survey that supplements the paint satisfaction study brings additional insights that have enabled us to put the customer’s voice in a larger context and to help manufacturers and retailers in these difficult times,” said Christina Cooley, Head of @ home- Practice at JD performance. “Increasingly, DIY enthusiasts are looking to websites to find the best paint products that match their vision and then looking to retailers for guides to ensure success.”
While COVID-19 puts many industries at risk, the paint industry – as part of residential construction – is less affected than others, according to Moody’s (Moodys.com/coronavirus). In fact, there is evidence from the JD Power Impulse Survey that color and stain purchases could potentially outperform typical Q2 trends. The brands and retailers who benefit the most from this opportunity are characterized by an exceptional customer experience.
Sherwin-Williams ranks highest in the interior paint segment with 867 points. Benjamin Moore (863) takes second place and BEHR (860) takes third.
Sherwin-Williams ranks highest in the exterior paint segment with 876 points. Benjamin Moore (861) takes second place.
With 850 points, Sherwin-Williams occupies the highest place in the segment of external stains. Rust-Oleum (843) takes second place and BEHR (839) takes third.
With 868 points, Sherwin-Williams ranks highest in the paint retailer segment. Benjamin Moore Paint Stores (856) ranks second and Menards (845) ranks third.
The 2020 color satisfaction study is based on the responses from 5,631 customers who have bought and applied interior, exterior and / or exterior paints in the last 12 months. The study was carried out in January 2020.
