Painting VR Is Boneworks For Artists On Oculus Quest

Painting VR isn’t an incredible new tilt brush competitor.

It’s not about sculpting 3D assets or sweeping a brush through virtual space. It’s really just about bringing the traditional experience into headsets. Yes, what we used to do – the actual reality. As simple as it sounds, it works so well that you wonder why no one has done it before.

Due to its release in early access on the Oculus Quest App Lab on May 5 for $ 9.99, Painting VR feels like a boneworks with a brush. That said, it worked out all of the physics of VR interaction, but instead of painting hallways with zombie brains, you’re painting a canvas with paint. Check it out in action below.

Now I’m not the least bit artistically gifted, but the accessibility, quality and web of ideas of Painting VR that break reality exactly when you want them to really feel special about me. In the beta that I tried, I found myself in front of a huge canvas that was equipped with the tools and space that most artists dream of being able to access. The virtual menu doesn’t have to call up any brush types – you just teleport to the menu you want and pick it up.

Crucially, Painting VR gives you options on how to approach your piece. Do you want the authentic experience? Then use a switch to raise or lower the canvas, or teleport to a platform to reach higher areas. However, if you want to use the logical, sneaky VR shortcuts, a quick press of the thumb stick extends the brush handle forward, so you can always adjust items out of reach.

However, it is the feel of the painting itself that really works. Press a brush against a wall and it will flex exactly as you’d expect, so you can make strokes that feel authentic to the touch. I was really impressed with how controlled I felt when I stroked it, and could only imagine what works real painters could conjure up with these tools. Even with a spray, realistic drops can be created that run across the canvas.

Developer Oisoi also has big plans for the future. The early start of access comes with a set of basic brushes. Over the next 12 months, however, the team plans to add new tools, more unrealistic options like a zero gravity mode, and eventually multiplayer support and studio visits.
