Mellon’s Melons! Wyeth Pumpkin Painting Tops At Stair

HUDSON, NY – A mixed media painting by Jamie Wyeth depicting deflated jack-o-lanterns illuminated the sale of the Ligonier, Penn., Estate of Richard P. Mellon through Stair Galleries on March 23. According to Lisa Thomas, director of visual arts at Stair, the quality of the work entitled “After Halloween” was “exceptional” and aroused the interest of a combination of private and commercial bidders who dealt over eight telephone lines. In the end, a commercial buyer won the lot for $ 86,100, well ahead of its $ 20 / $ 40,000 estimate. It was the highest price seen on the sale of 342 lots, more than 98 percent of which was sold when the hammer fell on the last lot.

The prices quoted include the buyer’s commission; A detailed summary will appear in a future issue.
