Waikato Police found a Goldie painting that was stolen while breaking into a house in Hamilton.
New Zealand artist CF Goldie’s painting “Sleep ’tis a Gentle” was captured between December 27, 2020 and January 3, 2021, along with numerous other unique works of art and antiques, when a house was broken into in Hamilton East.
Police say the painting still needs a thorough examination but appears to be undamaged.
The owners had been informed and were delighted to hear that it had been found.
The stolen painting was found over the weekend as police continued their investigation into the break-in.
Richard Thomson, director of the International Art Gallery, said the painting was a work of art worth “million dollars plus”.
“I’ve sold dozens of Goldies and this is a really good example of his work, which has all of the characteristics.”
Three men, all of whom have name suppression, were charged with the incident and are currently on trial in the Hamilton District Court of burglary.
