Banksy painting Game Changer to be auctioned for NHS charities | Banksy
A Banksy painting of a boy dropping his Batman and Spider-Man action figures for a superhero nurse could raise more than £ 3 million for the NHS.
Christie’s has announced that it will sell the artwork on behalf of the artist. Proceeds will go to NHS nonprofit organizations.
The painting, titled Game Changer, was delivered to Southampton General Hospital last May during the first wave of the pandemic. The note read, “Thank you for everything you do. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if it’s just black and white. “
It was hanging in a corridor near the emergency room and was a huge boost to morale, according to hospital managers.
Now the original is being sold while a reproduction hangs in the hospital.
Katharine Arnold, a contemporary art specialist at Christie’s, said Game Changer is a universal tribute to everyone, everywhere, to help tackle the crisis on the front lines.
She said: “At a time when we can dare to hope again and look at life beyond the pandemic, it is important to ponder the many symbols of strength and hope that we have seen internationally since early 2020 .
“Banksy’s Game Changer was a beacon for the staff and patients at Southampton General Hospital, and the artist wanted it to be auctioned off with proceeds going to the NHS.
“The work pays homage to the strength and resilience of those who have shown real leadership during the pandemic, the staff of our vital NHS.”
Game Changer will debut outside the hospital and will be hanging in a window at Christie’s London headquarters from March 8-15. It will be sold at the auction house’s marquee art night sale on March 23, at an estimate of £ 2.5million to £ 3.5million.
The sale follows a pattern where Banksy sold a triptych at Sotheby’s last summer to raise money for a hospital in Bethlehem. Mediterranean Sea View 2017 consisted of three traditionally framed seascapes from Romanticism, to which Banksy had added stranded lifebuoys and life jackets to make a statement on the global migrant crisis. It was sold for £ 2.2m.
The record for a Banksy painting at auction was set by a huge work called Devolved Parliament, which shows chimpanzees as MPs in the Chamber of Commons. It sold for £ 9.9 million in 2019. Banksy responded on Instagram that it was a “shame I didn’t own it”.
The anonymous artist continues to be active on the streets and last week channeled Bob Ross in a video on his Instagram page painting a fleeing prisoner by the side of Reading Prison.
